Do I need to buy a licence to go pike fishing?

Yes, you will need to buy a Non-Migratory Trout and Coarse Rod Fishing Licence.

Any angler aged 12 years or over must have a licence to fish for pike and other coarse fish in England, Scotland and Wales.

On the Environment Agency website (except concessions)

At any Post Office

How much do fishing licences cost (2011/12)?

Adult Full Season £27

Concession £18

Junior (12 to 16 years) £5

8 day £10

1 day £3.75




When do concessionary licences apply?

If you are aged 65 or over.

If you are a blue badge holder or in receipt of Disability Living Allowance.




When are licences valid from and to?

The licence starts on 1st April every year and runs to 31st March.

A close season is in force between 15th March and 15th June inclusive on rivers, drains, streams and on some stillwater and canals.

Always check you are allowed to fish before fishing.




How many rods does a licence entitle me to use?

Two rods for coarse fish such as pike; One rod for trout.

You can buy two licences if you want to fish with 3 or 4 rods at one time.

Please stick to a maximum of two rods until you are experienced at landing and unhooking pike.




What is the difference between a licence and a permit?

Rod licences differ from permits, (often referred to as tickets or day tickets) which give permission to fish particular water or waters and are issued by fishery owners.




What is the penalty for fishing without a licence?

If you are caught fishing without one, you are cheating other anglers and could be fined up to £2,500
